Pre A1 Starters is the first of three Cambridge English : Young Learners (YLE) that are specially designed for young learners. Through these tests children come into first contact with everyday written and spoken English and gain confidence.

The tests assess a child’s skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Listening

Pre A1 Starters Listening is composed of 4 parts. Each part starts with one or two examples. Children listen to the recording twice.

Part 1

What does the first Part include?

A big picture showing people doing different things. On and under the picture there are some names. The children must listen carefully to a dialogue between an adult and a child and draw a line from each name to the right person in the big picture.

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

Ashortdialoguebetweenachildandanadultandsomequestions. The children listen to the recording and write the correct answer (a name or a number) after every question.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

Fiveshortdialoguesbetweendifferentpairsofpeople. For every dialogue there is a question and three photos. The children must listen carefully to every dialogue and choose the correct answer (A, B or C).

Part 4

What does Part 4include?

A big pictures that has seven examples of the same object (for example, seven balls or seven books) The children must listen carefully to a dialogue between an adult and a child and colour every object with the colour that is indicated by the dialogue.

To listen to words, colours and prepositions.

Reading and Writing

Pre A1 Starters Reading and Writing is composed of 5 parts. Each part starts with one or two examples. For all the Reading and Writing parts, children must write their answers with right spelling.

Part 1

What does Part 1 include?

Five pictures with objects. Under each picture there is a sentence that starts with “This is a ….” or “These are …” If the sentence is right, the children must put a ✓ next to the picture. If the sentence is wrong, they must put a ❌.

What do children practise?

To read short sentences and recognise words.

How many are the questions?

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

A big picture and some sentences about the picture. If the sentence is right , the children must write 'yes'. If the sentence is wrong , the must write 'no'.

What do children practise?

To read sentences about a picture. To write one word answers.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

Five pictures with objects. Children must find the right word in English for the object. After every picture there are dashes (- - -) that show how many letters the word has and reveal some of the jumbled letters. Children must put the letters in the right order to form the word.

What do children practise?

Spelling of single words.

Part 4

What does Part 4 include?

A text, based on fact, has some missing words (gaps). Under the text, there is a box with pictures and words. The children must choose the right word from the box and copy it in every gap.

To read a text and fill in the missing words (nouns).

Part 5

What does Part 5 include?

Three pictures that tell a story. Each picture has one or two questions. Children must see the pictures and write an answer for every question. It is enough to write only one word for every answer.

To read questions about an illustrated story.To write one word answers.

Speaking

Pre A1 Starters Speaking is composed of four parts. Each student is alone with the examiner but someone who speaks Greek (like your teacher) will introduce him to the examiner and explain to him what he has to do in Greek.

Part 1

What does Part 1 include?

The examiner greets the child and asks him his name. Then, he asks him to show some objects in a big picture. Then, he shows him small pictures and objects, names three of them and asks the child to show them. Afterwards, he asks him to put every small picture with the object, in a spot in the big picture from Part 1 (for example, “Put the shell under the tree”).

To understand and follow oral instructions.

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

The examiner asks the child questions about the big picture from Part 1 (for example, “What is this?” “What colour is this?”), as well as questions like “Tell me about..”an object from the big picture.

What do children practise?

To understand and follow oral instructions.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

The examiner asks questions about the small pictures with objects from Part 2 (for example “What is this?”, “Do you have a ….?”).

What do children practise?

To understand and answer oral questions.

Part 4

What does Part 4 include?

The examiner asks the candidate questions (for example, age, family, friends).

What do children practise?

To understand and answer oral questions.
