Πιστοποιητικά: Young Learners English: Flyers

Α2 Flyers is the highest of the three levels of Cambridge English: Young Learners (YLE) tests that is specially designed for young learners. These exams give children a great opportunity to show that they can respond to the demands of speaking and writing in English at a basic level.

The tests assess the child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Listening

A2 Flyers listening is composed of 5 parts. Each part starts with one or two examples. Children listen to every recording twice.

Part 1

What does Part 1 include?

A big picture that shows people doing different things. On and under the picture there are some names. Children must listen carefully to a dialogue between an adult and a child and draw a line from each name to the right person in the big picture.

What do children practise?

To listen to names and descriptions.

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

A short conversation between two people. There is a form or a page from a notebook with some words that are missing (gaps). Children must listen to the recording and write the word or the number that is missing in each gap.

What do children practise?

To listen to names, spelling, and other information.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

Two sets of pictures. On the left there are some pictures with people as well as their names or places or objects. On the right there is a set of pictures with letters but without words. Children must listen to a conversation between two people and match every picture on the right with one of the pictures on the left.

To listen to words, names and detailed information.

Part 4

What does Part 4 include?

Five short conversations. There is a question and three pictures for every conversation. Children must decide which picture shows the right answer to the questions and put a ✓ in the box under the picture.

Part 5

What does Part 5 include?

A big picture. Children must listen carefully to a conversation between an adult and a child, colour different objects for three of the questions and write a word for two of the questions in the picture.

Reading and Writing

A2 Flyers Reading and Writing is composed of 7 parts. Every part starts with one or two examples. For all the Reading and Writing parts, children must write their answers with the right spelling.

Part 1

What does Part 1 include?

Fifteen words and ten definitions (sentences that describe or explain ten of the fifteen words). Children must write the right word next to every definition.

What do children practise?

To read definitions and match them with words. To copy words.

How many are the questions?

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

A short conversation between people. Everything the first speaker says is printed on the question paper while there are gaps in the answers of the second speaker. For each gap, children must choose the right answer from the list (A-H).

What do children practise?

To read and complete a continuous dialogue. To write letters.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

A text with missing words (nouns, adjectives or verbs) (gaps). Next to the text there is a box with words. Children must choose the right word from the box for each gap and copy it. For the last question, children must choose between three possible titles the one they think more suitable for the text.

To read specific information and understand the gist of the text. To copy words.

Part 4

What does Part 4 include?

A text with missing words (gaps). Next to each gap there are three possible answers. Children must decide which answer is right and copy it in the gap.

To read and understand a text based on facts. Simple grammar. To copy words.

Part 5

What does Part 5 include?

A complete story and seven sentences about the story. Each sentence has a gap which children must complete using one, two, three or four words.

To read a story. To complete sentences.

Part 6

What does Part 6 include?

A text is a letter or a diary with five gaps. Children must write the missing word in every gap without having the possibility to choose the word from a list.

To read and understand a simple text.

What does Part 7 include?

Children write a story that is based on three pictures.

To write short stories.

Speaking

A2 Flyers Speaking is composed of four parts. Each student is alone with the examiner but someone who speaks Greek (like his teacher) will introduce him to the examiner and will explain to him what he has to do in Greek.

Part 1

What does Part 1 include?

The examiner greets the child and asks him his name. Then, he shows him two similar pictures but with some differences. The examiner asks the child to describe four differences.

What do children practise?

To describe differences between pictures. To talk about colours, shapes, numbers, positions. What do people/objects look like, what are they doing e.t.c.

Part 2

What does Part 2 include?

The child and the examiner each have two similar pictures (for example pictures from two different classrooms). The examiner has information about one picture while the child has information about the other. First, the examiner asks the child questions about the picture he has in front of him and then the child asks the examiner similar questions about the other picture.

What do children practise?

To answer questions with short answers. To ask questions to get information.

Part 3

What does Part 3 include?

The examiner shows four pictures that tell a story and talks to the child about the first picture. Then, he must continue the story and describe the rest of the three pictures. The title of the story and the names of the basic characters are given.

What do children practise?

To understand the beginning of a story and be able to continue it. To describe pictures.

Part 4

What does Part 4 include?

The examiner asks the child questions about himself (for example, about school, weekends, his friends and hobbies).

What do children practise?

To understand and answer personal questions.
